Call for Papers:
New Challenges for Fiscal & Monetary Policy
February 21, 2025
The Department of Economics at the Miami Herbert Business School, University of Miami, invites submissions for a conference on “New Challenges for Fiscal and Monetary Policy.” The event will be held in person at the University of Miami campus in Coral Gables, Florida, on February 21, 2025. The conference will consist of a day-long academic program followed by a public keynote lecture, then a reception and dinner.
We are pleased to announce that the keynote speaker will be John Cochrane (Hoover).
In the aftermath of the social and economic upheaval of the pandemic, amidst fraying alliances and regional conflicts, the global economy faces a new set of challenges and uncertainties. Amidst higher inflation and interest rates, increasing public debt, and strained budgets, fiscal and monetary policymakers encounter significant constraints in addressing these challenges. This conference aims to highlight academic contributions on designing, calibrating, and coordinating monetary and fiscal policies in today’s global economy.
We seek both theoretical and empirical contributions. Topics of interest include:
The conduct of fiscal and monetary policy amid global supply shocks, tight labor markets, and heightened macroeconomic and political uncertainty.
The international transmission channels of fiscal and monetary policy under geoeconomic fragmentation, and the interaction between monetary and fiscal stability.
The sustainability of public financing with rising interest rates and fiscal dominance.
The long-term implications and trade-offs for monetary and fiscal policy.
The impact of changes in political governance, whether within the United States or internationally
The influence of inflation expectations and labor market conditions on inflation and monetary policy.
The implications of the Federal Reserve’s 2020 policy framework and the upcoming framework review.
Please submit your paper (preferred) or extended abstract to Noah Williams (noahwilliams@miami.edu) by December 31, 2024.
